Turtle Found in Poti Returned to Sea
A rare Giant turtle found in Poti, a seaside town on Georgia’s Black Sea coast, has been returned to sea following its rescue in March.
Normally found in the Mediterranean, the turtle is known as a loggerhead sea turtle or Caretta Caretta and normally weighs around 140kg. Some loggerheads can even weigh over 450kg.
The turtle was taken to the aquarium at the Paragraph Resort & Spa Shekvetili hotel in Shekvetili where it had been receiving special treatment.
The International Union for The Conservation of Nature considers loggerheads to be a vulnerable animal. The turtle will be released back to its natural habitat when it fully recovers.
The National Environmental Agency released the turtle into Black Sea waters today.
