New Protected Area Created in Georgia
A new Protected Area - Pontus Oak Reserve - has been created in Georgia.
According to the Agency of Protected Areas, the reserve is located in Chokhatauri Municipality, Guria Region and is spread on an area of 443 hectares. This is the only place in the country where Pontus Oak trees are spread over a relatively large area.
The aim of creating the new reserve is to protect and preserve the unique plant included in the Red Book of Georgia and save the forest and its ecosystem.
The authors of the relevant draft are the Ministry of Environment Protection and Agriculture of Georgia, Agency of Protected Areas and WWF Caucasus Program Office.
