Michel Platini Detained on Suspicion of Corruption

Former UEFA president and French football legend Michel Platini has been detained on suspicion of corruption over 2022 World Cup.

The former France international captain was detained by French police on Tuesday morning in Nanterre, a western suburb of Paris, as part of the investigation into corruption surrounding how the 2022 World Cup hosting rights were awarded.

The 63-year-old was elected as the president of Uefa in 2007 and he served until 2015. He was banned from the position by Fifa's Ethics Committee after being found guilty of a series of ethical breaches. He was banned from football for four years following the 2015 football corruption scandal. He was found to have arranged a $2 million backdated salary payment to Blatter.

In the bidding for the 2022 World Cup, Platini voted for Qatar to host the tournament.

The small Gulf state was awarded the global event in December 2010. There has been much criticism from different corners of the football world about the country's ability to host the tournament.
