Organizers Say Tbilisi Pride Will Not Be Canceled

Today, the organizers of Tbilisi Pride released a statement announcing their decision on the events scheduled for June 18-23. They say that despite the existing risks from the conservative part of Georgian society, Tbilisi Pride will go ahead.

"Despite the existing risks, the first dignity march in the history of Georgia is still in force and we are not going to cancel it. Our supporting groups, family members, friends, international organizations and diplomatic corps, citizens of the EU and our neighboring states will participate in the public march," the organizers' statement reads.

"Over the last days, the team of Tbilisi Pride has faced threats, with illegal gang-formations announcing they would begin patrolling Tbilisi streets in order to take physical revenge on us. This represents a danger not only for us and other LGBT people, but for everyone who is considered "different" from their point of view.

"On this background, we see the state remains inactive, and we hear irresponsible and threatening statements from the authorities that associate us with violent groups.

"The government once again emphasized that there is no political will or long-term vision that indicates the desire to put an end to hate and implement systematic reforms in the country. The actions of the government against violent groups are inadequate and ineffective. Georgian statehood and institutions are in danger.

"That is why we are going to march! We are going to force the government to protect human rights and fulfill the obligations under the Constitution of the country. We are excited to demonstrate the challenges faced by lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer people. We are marching because today not only we are in danger, but also the statehood and democratic structure of Georgia.

"Therefore, we urge everyone, regardless of sexual orientation and gender identity, to join us!"
