Prosecutor: Violence against Police Started by Melia
Amiran Guluashvili, a representative of the Prosecutor General's Office, discussed the details of charges against opposition MP Nika Melia at a joint sitting of two committees in the Parliament of Georgia.
According to the prosecutor, demonstrators gathered in front of the Parliament building on June 21 started attacking law enforcers under the leadership of opposition MP Nika Melia.
“At around 21:00, MP Nikanor Melia addressed demonstrators and told them to occupy the parliament building in case of non-fulfillment of their demands. The demonstrators started attacking law enforcers and this process was led and participated in by Nikanor Melia”, Guluashvili stated.
The prosecutor said there are both formal and factual grounds for the detention of the opposition MP.
Suspension of immunity for MP Nika Melia was the main topic of discussion at the joint sitting of two parliamentary committees.
The Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia charged Nika Melia for the June 20 incidents in front of the Parliament in Tbilisi and has already appealed to the parliament to ask for Melia’s detention.
The Opposition MP was summoned to the Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia today and appeared in Parliament.
