Applicants from Abkhazia Unable to Attend United National Exams

The United National Exams of 2019 started today at 8:00, seeing 41,000 registered entrants this year. There are 23 examinations centers in 11 cities across the country, with ambulance services and patrol police mobilized on site.

However, the applicants from the region of Abkhazia, currently occupied by Russia, were unable to attend the first exam of Georgian Language and Literature today due to the recent closure of the so-called border between Abkhazia and the rest of the country by the de facto Government of the region.

50 entrants were waiting for the possibility to cross the Enguri Bridge and sit the examination.

Irina Abuladze, Deputy Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sport of Georgia commented on the case, noting that the Ministry is following the recent developments and will think of the measures to ensure access to the exams for all students from the occupied region.

The de facto government of Abkhazia closed the so-called border, presenting the recent large-scale demonstrations across Georgia as the reason for the decision.
