Particular Medicines to Be Available for 1 GEL for Vulnerable Groups

On July 16, at the press briefing held prior to the Executive Government Meeting, Mamuka Bakhtadze, Prime Minister of Georgia stated that aside socially vulnerable individuals, the representatives of the other vulnerable groups, including pensioners and persons with disabilities, will be given an opportunity to purchase particular trademark medicines for just 1 GEL.

The Head of the Georgian Government briefed about the initiative, noting that there will 35 medications on the list included in the program, which are most commonly prescribed for 6 chronic diseases in different areas: cardio-vascular, lung, epilepsy, thyroid gland, diabetes, as well as Parkinson.

“One of the most painful challenges manifests itself in the fact that out-of-pocket payments of our citizens on medication is very high in Georgia,” said Bakhtadze, adding that the government has been actively working on the mitigation of the issue. “We will be considering this very important initiative at the Executive Government Meeting today and adjustments will thus be made to the program of medication for chronic diseases.”

The Prime Minister concluded his speech pledging that the Georgian Government is to continue working in this direction in order to minimize the out-of-pocket payment of the citizens of the country on medication.
