GSPSA - Missing Bear Cubs Are Alive

Good news hit social media today when the Georgian Society for the Protection and Safety of Animals (GSPSA) announced that the endangered brown bear cubs which had gone missing after they were found being held captive outside a restaurant in the village of Variani, Gori Municipality, had been found alive and safe.

“We would like to inform you that the missing bear cubs are alive!

"We received the relevant notification from the Ministry of Environmental Protection of Georgia, saying that the bear cubs which were hidden after being held captive outside a restaurant in the village of Variani, had been found in the village of Arbo, Gori Municipality and handed over to the Head of the Zoological Center, Soso Jikurishvili, on July 28.

"We will publish the photo material of the bear cubs along with additional information”, reads the GSPSA statement.

On July 26, the Georgian Society for the Protection and Safety of Animals released a statement demanding an investigation into missing endangered brown bear cubs. According to the GSPSA, the captured bear cubs were removed from the restaurant territory and it was possible that they had been killed to hide the evidence of their existence.

According to the Criminal Code of Georgia, hunting animals included on the “Red List” is punishable by fine or correctional work for up to two years, or by imprisonment for up to three years and deprivation of the right to work for a period of three years.
