Salome Zurabishvili: Georgia’s Heart is Burning with the Amazon

“Georgia’s heart is burning with the Amazon Rainforest”, President of Georgia Salome Zurabishvili said today in a Tweet.

“Georgia’s heart is burning with the Amazon Rainforest. We join the struggle to save our planet and call to #ActForTheAmazon,” she tweeted.

The Amazon rainforest is burning at a record rate, with a record number of fires having been raging for three weeks.

Scientists say the ongoing destruction will have dire consequences for Brazil and the world.

The effects of damage to the Amazon go far beyond Brazil and its neighbors. The area's rainforest generates more than 20% of the world's oxygen and 10% of the world's known biodiversity. The Amazon is referred to as the "lungs of the planet" and plays a major role in regulating the climate.
