Former Zimbabwe President Dies Aged 95
Robert Mugabe, the ex-President of Zimbabwe, has died aged 95. The death was announced by his successor, President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
“It is with the utmost sadness that I announce the passing on of Zimbabwe’s founding father and former President, Cde Robert Mugabe. Cde Mugabe was an icon of liberation, a pan-Africanist who dedicated his life to the emancipation and empowerment of his people. His contribution to the history of our nation and continent will never be forgotten. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” reads the post of Mnangagwa, published on his official Twitter page.
The name of Robert Mugabe is associated with liberation and tyranny at the same time. A hero of Africa, who strived for independence, spend more than a decade in prison for criticizing the government and broadened access to health and education for the black majority of the country, turned into a corrupt dictator and violent fighter for power.
More than 30 years of governance of Mugabe resulted in the military coup and his placement under house arrest in 2017.
Mugabe had been receiving treatment in a hospital in Singapore since April.
