Jacques Chirac, the former French President, has died aged 86.

"He died this morning surrounded by his family, peacefully," his son-in-law told AFP.

Chirac, who served as President of France and ex officio Co-Prince of Andorra from 1995 to 2007, the Prime Minister of France from 1974 to 1976 and from 1986 to 1988, as well as the Mayor of Paris from 1977 to 1995, boasted one of the longest continuous political careers in Europe.

The French National Assembly has observed a minute's silence in homage to him.
