PM: Yesterday's Incident is a Deliberate Attack on the State and Church
“What we saw yesterday is a deliberate attack on the state and the church,” Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia said before the cabinet meeting today, regarding yesterday's session of the Holy Synod, which ended with scandalous results.
In particular, the Metropolitan of Chkondidi, Petre Tsaava, being fired from the position of Bishop by the Synod because he submitted incriminating evidence against Patriarch Ilia II.
The head of the government emphasized that the Georgian Patriarch is a symbol of the Church and statehood.
“What we saw yesterday is a deliberate attack on the state and the church. Of course, some groups are trying to harm our country with various provocations. We have seen such an attempt some time ago when they were planning a revolutionary scenario against the state and the government. Today, they seem to have decided to bring uncertainty to the church through destructive actions. Of course, this is unacceptable. It is absolutely unacceptable and I am convinced that each citizen of our country will stand by the side of our Patriarch today. We will, of course, overcome this, withstand it and come out of it much stronger through prayers for our Patriarch. We will not allow anyone to endanger our tomorrow and our children’s tomorrow with such destructive actions in the state and church,” the Prime Minister said.
