Vatican State Secretary: Holy See Fully Supports Georgia’s Sovereignty

"The Holy See fully supports Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity," Cardinal Secretary of State of Vatican Pietro Parolin said at the event held in Tbilisi City Assembly (Sakrebulo) yesterday.

Parolin noted that the Holy See (Vatican) was the first among the international communities which recognized Georgia’s independence and opened a diplomatic mission in Tbilisi.

"Even a few hours in Tbilisi is enough to feel Georgian people’s kindliness, values, cultural and religious traditions. Georgia's roots go deeply into Christianity and it is one of the oldest countries in Christianity," he added.

Cardinal Secretary of State is paying a three-day visit to Georgia, within the frames of which he met with the Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia, His Holiness and Beatitude Ilia II and Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia. 

“I want to convey you a greeting from His Holiness, the Pope of Rome. I met the Pope on Monday and told him I was going to Georgia on Christmas Eve. As soon as I mentioned Georgia, his face was filled with joy and told me to convey his warm greeting to the Patriarch," the Cardinal said at the meeting with Ilia II. 

During the meeting held on December 28, Georgian PM and Parolin spoke of the situation in the Russian occupied Georgian regions of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali (South Ossetia), as well as the country’s European aspirations. 

PM Gakharia thanked the Cardinal for strong support to Georgia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty and emphasized that Georgia is committed to deepening cooperation with the Vatican.

In addition, Pietro Parolin congratulated Georgia on the release of Doctor Vazha Gaprindashvili from Tskhinvali Prison, with whom he personally met on December 29.
