Parliamentary Majority not to Make Political Statements Today due to Baghdadi Tragedy
At the opening of the Parliament's spring session, lawmakers paid tribute to the memory of those killed in the Baghdadi fire.
Due to the tragedy that occurred last night in Georgia's Imereti region, the parliamentary majority has refused to make political statements at today's sitting of parliament.
“It was a very tragic accident. There is a growing emotion when it comes to children. As a result of consultations with majority MPs, we considered that making political statements today would not be relevant given the fact. Therefore, the parliamentary majority refuses to make political statements today to show respect to the memory of the deceased, "Deputy Speaker of Parliament and Leader of Parliamentary Majority Mamuka Mdinaradze said at a plenary session.
As he noted, the majority team also discussed postponing the session.
“We considered that a violation of the Parliament's Rules of Procedure would not be correct in this case, that is the only reason why the session has not been postponed. As for the information about the tragedy, the relevant services will spread detailed information and the truth will be revealed soon,” Mdinaradze said.
The opposition has also canceled the protest rallies outside parliament scheduled for today due to Baghdadi tragedy.
"The opposition has canceled a planned rally due to the tragedy in Baghdadi, however, protests will resume tomorrow morning," Gigi Ugulava, one of the leaders of European Georgia, told journalists.
Fire in Baghdadi claimed the lives of six people, including a mother and her four children. Reportedly, the woman was pregnant. Law enforcers and rescuers are still working at the site of a fire. Forensic experts are expected to arrive on the spot to determine the cause of the fire.
