Penalties to Rise for Garbage Dumping
Penalties for garbage dumping are to increase substantially. The draft amendments to the Waste Management Code have already been registered in Parliament.
According to the draft law, environmental pollution by up to 2 kg of municipal waste from a dwelling or other building will result in a person being fined GEL 200 instead of GEL 100. The same littering from a car will result in the driver being fined GEL 250 instead of GEL 120. Those who dump up to 2kg of waste from public transport will have to pay the same amount.
Environmental pollution with waste amounting to or exceeding 2 kg envisages a fine of GEL 500 (instead of 150) for individuals and GEL 1500 (instead of 1,000) for legal entities.
In case of environmentaldaage caused by the dumping of a large amount of waste (including vehicles, electrical equipment and construction equipment), individuals will be fined GEL 2000 and legal entities GEL 6000.
The initiators of the legislative changes are the members of the parliamentary majority, Sulkhan Makhatadze and Goga Gulordava.
