Updates: How Georgia is Fighting the Coronavirus

On Wednesday morning, a meeting of the city government was held. Kakha Kaladze, the Mayor of Tbilisi, said that City Hall was doing all in its power to prevent the sprrad of coronavirus.

“I’d like to calm our citizens. City Hall is taking all the appropriate measures to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus,” he said.

The Government has ordered the cancellation of every public event. While asking citizens to refrain from traveling to the countries that are experiencing the coronavirus boom, especially Italy – sanitary norms were followed up in Tbilisi. Underground passages and public transportation have been disinfected. Following the decision of Prime Minister Gakharia, all schools, colleges and kindergartens have been shut until March 16 and are currently under works of disinfection. The cleaning of public transportation has been taken to the regions – yesterday disinfection works took place in the buses of Batumi and Zugdidi. It has also been reported that the demand for disinfection services has increased.

Georgia’s cases of confirmed coronavirus have been frozen at 3 since Sunday, February 29. All three patients are being monitored, and as Ekaterine Tikaradze, Georgia’s Minister of Internally Displaced Persons from the Occupied Territories, Labor, Health and Social Affairs, has reported their health condition remains satisfactory, not going through any complications. The latest reports say that 23 tests have been sent over to the Lugar Laboratory and all of them came back negative. However, even though Georgia has no new coronavirus cases, the list of prevention measures to be taken by the population continues to grow.

Amiran Gamkrelidze, the Director of the National Center for Disease Control, has now urged the citizens to avoid paying with cash, since the disease can be spread that way, too.

To raise awareness on the novel coronavirus, the government has created a website www.stopcov.ge where people can read about what they should be doing as a form of recommendation to keep from the virus, and about what government has done to keep the citizens healthy.
