Writer and Philosopher Givi Margvelashvili Dies at 92

Givi Margelashvili, a renowned Georgian German-language writer and philosopher, has died at the age of 92.

He was born in 1927, in Berlin. His father fled to Germany in 1921, following the Soviet invasion of Georgia. 

Margvelashvili has long been recognized as a prolific existentialist philosopher and writer.

In 1995, he was awarded the Literature Prize of Brandenburg federal state. In 2006, he was awarded the prestigious Goethe Institute Medal. The University of Bamberg appointed him Professor for Poetry.

In 2013, the Givi Margvelashvili Prize was set up in Georgia and the first person to be awarded was Givi himself. 

In 2015, he was granted the Presidential Order of Excellence by the President of Georgia Giorgi Margvelashvili.
