Tbilisi State University Rises in the Best Global Universities Rankings 2020

Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University raised its position to rank 113th in the prestigious US News Best Global Universities Rankings 2020. TSU was sharing 322nd place with the University of Tartu (Estonia).

In the field rankings, TSU improved its position in Physics by 22 points to occupy 256th place.

It is now ahead of all Hungarian and Romanian universities and is in a better position than many universities in Great Britain, France, Germany and other countries.

The Best Global Universities Rankings evaluated the world's top 1500 research universities in 81 countries. Only TSU met the criteria from the Caucasus region.

Among the 325 best universities from the post-Soviet space, just two others are included along with TSU: the University of Tartu and the M.Sc. Lomonosov Moscow State University.

The US News&World Report has been ranking the best universities in the world for over 30 years. When compiling ratings, universities are evaluated based on 13 indicators that measure their academic research performance and global / regional reputation, as well as their quality of publications, scientific books and conferences.

Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University was formed in 1918 and is the oldest university in Georgia as well as the Caucasus region. 

The founder of the university was a Georgian historian and academic, Ivane Javakhishvili, alongside several scientists including Giorgi Akhvlediani, Shalva Nutsubidze, Dimitri Uznadze, and Grigol Tsereteli.

The university is affiliated with foreign scientific and educational centers, which include the University of Saarland in Germany, Brunel University in the United Kingdom as well the Association of European Universities, UNESCO, and the Council of Europe.
