Metropolitan of Kythera Arrested for Defying Gov't on Closed Churches
Metropolitan Seraphim of Kythera was arrested after deciding to open the Church of Estavromenos on March 20, the Orthodox Times reports, based on the information of the Athens-Macedonian News Agency and protothema.gr.
The article further reads that as he was performing a service and the bells were ringing so as to call the faithful to come to the church.
"The Metropolitan’s decision was contrary to the government’s decision regarding the suspension of all daily services due to the coronavirus outbreak. The Metropolitan, after arriving at the police station of the island, told the police that he had not yet received the encyclical instruction sent by Archbishop Ieronymos," reads the publication.
The Metropolitan was released by order of the General Prosecutor, after a case file was opened.
