Metropolitan Grigol: Following Pandemic Rules Does Not Entail Lack of Faith
Metropolitan Grigol of Poti and Khobi calls on churchgoers to keep a distance from one another and respect the rules of social distancing
“Our faith in Christ does not mean that we should refuse to adher to common sense; we should always respect common sense. Following the rules and guidance to tackle the disease does not imply weakness of faith”, Grigol said.
Metropolitan Grigol also announced that persons would be able to receive communion at home.
“Please consider it a form of fasting to fulfil this blessing that I tell you now”, Grigol told the persons gathered in Poti's main cathedral, adding that a list of those wishing to receive comunion at home would be made so that the clergy could start visiting.
He further advised churchgoers to listen to the liturgy from the courtyard, where sound amplifiers are installed, to avoid any physical closeness. "If people do not respect this rule, the Sunday Mass shall be held in a small church that can house only 5 persons," said Metropolitan Grigol.
On Friday, March 20, the Holy Synod held a meeting to discuss issues related to the current pandemic. The Synod announced the decision that believers would still use a common spoon during communion.
A state of emergency was declared in Georgia on March 21. Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia said that restrictions would be imposed on gatherings of more than 10 people in closed areas, including churches.
As of March 22, 54 persons have been infected with the new coronavirus in Georgia and 3 have recovered.
