Hackers Publish Voter Records for Georgia
US online media outlet ZDNet reported on March 30 that voter information for around 4.9 million Georgian citizens has been published on a hacking forum over the weekend.
“Personal information such as full names, home addresses, dates of birth, ID numbers, and mobile phone numbers were shared online in a 1.04 GB MDB (Microsoft Access database) file. The leaked data was spotted by the Under the Breach, a data breach monitoring and prevention service, and shared with ZDNet over the weekend,” reads the post.
It is unclear whether the data was provided by the forum user who posted it. The user claims that the database is obtained from the official website of the Central Election Commission.
Representatives of the Central Election Commission (CEC) deny that the data belongs to them.
“The published data is radically different from the voter list data available on the election administration portal,” CEC reported.
Investigation into the case has begun, says Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia.
"A detailed investigation is ongoing and further clarifications will be made in the near future," the Ministry said.
Georgia will hold parliamentary elections later this year in October.
