Greece Postpones Easter Celebration
On Wednesday, Greece's Holy Synod, the supreme body of the country's Orthodox Church, said that the coronavirus has led to their deciding to celebrate Easter behind closed doors.
Easter, the biggest holiday for the Christian Orthodox, falls on April 19 this year. The Synod has asked people to pray at home as the Easter liturgy will be performed in closed churches without parishioners in attendence.
The Synod said it "understands completely the anxiety of the Greek Republic at this crucial time" as it invited believers to pray at home. The body said it would "broadcast the holy liturgy using means provided by new technologies."
The public celebration of Easter will take place on May 27, 38 days after the holiday. It is believed that at the time the quarantine period will be over.
The Synod said the Greek Church was donating 150,000 Euros to the health service to help fight the coronavirus.
