Coronavirus: US Death Toll Surpasses 10,000

In the past 24 hours, the United States reported 25,563 new cases of the novel coronavirus, bringing the country’s total to 362,326. The US COVID-19 death toll has surpassed 10,000 now hitting 10,714, according to Worldometers.info.

The virus is now taking over New Jersey, reaching its cities as well as its suburbs. Many American cities like Los Angeles, Miami and New Orleans see the number of cases doubling every two to five days.

New York, however, seems to be plateauing. On Monday, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said the state had 599 new fatalities from the virus. While the number looks big, it is less than what the New York state had to see during these trying times. The number is almost identical with the data of the previous day, giving the population hope that New York might be passing their peak period. However, as the New York Governor has put it “if we are plateauing, we are plateauing at a very high level and there is tremendous stress on the health care system.” The state of New York has turned to Oregon and China for an emergency shipment of ventilators as the hospitals continue to get ever more overcrowded and medical equipment is in short supply. No American state has been hit harder by the COVID-19 than New York. In fact, the New York Times writes that the state is accountable for about half of the country’s virus-related deaths.

Governor Cuomo has urged the New York inhabitants to be responsible and mindful and follow the recommendations.
“Now is not the time to be playing Frisbee in the park with your friends,” said the NY Governor, underlining that “you don’t have the right to risk someone else’s life.”
