Georgian Orthodox Church Marks Holy Annunciation Day

Today, April 7, the Georgian  Orthodox Church is celebrating Holy Annunciation Day (Khareba).

The Khareba holiday celebrates the primary annunciation that was made by Archangel Gabriel to the Virgin Mary about the birth of Jesus Christ.

According to the Christian faith, while Virgin Mary was reading the Bible, Archangel Gabriel appeared and told her she would soon give birth to a son, who would be named Jesus.

There is Khareba nunnery located in the town of Kareli, in the Shida Kartli region of Georgia, where nuns are raising adorable Caucasian Shepherd puppies, an ancient breed of dog.

The monastery is home to the tomb of Mariam Batonishvili, the daughter of the powerful Georgian King Erekle II. The church was built in 1850.
