UK Pregnant Nurse Dies of COVID-19, Doctors Save Her Baby
A pregnant nurse died in London on Sunday after contracting COVID-19. Her child was delivered via an emergency caesarian and is fortunately alive and well. It is not yet known whether the baby also has the coronavirus infection.
Mary Agyeiwaa Agyapong, 28, was admitted to Luton and Dunstable University Hospital on April 7, having tested positive for the new coronavirus on April 5.
Mary’s two friends have set up a fundraiser in her name to support her family, which has already raised £20,000. They also said Mary’s daughter has been named Mary.
The same two friends wrote a post: "Mary was a blessing to everyone she came across and her love, care and sincerity will be irreplaceable. You will forever be in our hearts Mary. Your memories are still with us and we will cherish them forever until we meet again. We will forever miss you."
BBC wrote in its article: “Colleagues have paid tribute to Ms Agyapong, who also went by her married name Mary Boateng, on a fundraising page set up to support her family. The page raised thousands of pounds within hours of being set up on Wednesday morning.”
The Chief executive of Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, David Carter, said she was a "fantastic nurse and a great example of what we stand for in this trust".
Mary’s death has spur panic among pregnant healthcare workers across the UK, fearing to carry on working at the frontline amid the deadly pandemic.
