Occupation Forces Illegally Detain Citizens Near Tskhinvali

Representatives of the occupation forces have illegally detained a man and his wife living in the village of Khurvaleti near occupied Tskhinvali (South Ossetia) region.

Malkhaz Vanishvili, a young man who was illegally detained by the occupation forces, is the grandson of Data Vanishvili, local of Khurvaleti (a village beyond the occupation line), whose house and agricultural lands have been divided in two by the occupying forces for several years already.

Reportedly, the family members of Data Vanishvili were on territory controlled by the Central Government of Georgia for several days, and when they tried to return home, they were detained by the Russian military.

The detainees have been placed in quarantine in occupied Akhalgori.
Yesterday, on April 17, Russian-controlled occupation forces continued illegal installations in the village of Takhtisdziri, Kareli Municipality.
The illegal borderization has been condemned by the US Embassy Tbilisi and Carl Hartzell, Ambassador of the European Union to Georgia.

The illegal detention of Georgian citizens by Russian occupation forces near the occupation line is a common issue. Detainees are usually released after their family pays a fine.

Russia recognized the Georgian regions of Tskhinvali and Abkhazia as independent states in the wake of the Russia-Georgia 2008 war.
