45 Georgians Infected with Coronavirus Abroad, 13 Have Died

Minister of Foreign Affairs Davit Zalkaliani has announced that 45 Georgian citizens are infected with COVID-19 abroad, while 13 have died.

The majority of these persons are suffering relatively mild forms of the infection, he added.

“The regulations on transferring deceased citizens have tightened and decisions have to be made in accordance with a myriad of protocols, so the process can often be drawn-out. In our case, the state provided timely assistance to the family members of the deceased citizens," said Zalkaliani.

The Georgian government has hitherto evacuated 10,115 Georgian citizens from foreign countries and has carried out 61 special flights, including from Athens, Vienna, Madrid, Copenhagen, Warsaw, Berlin, Vienna, London, and more.

“Our main goal was to take care of our citizens, help them return home, as well as support them abroad,” said Zalkaliani.

Additional special flights are scheduled in the near future to bring more citizens back to Georgia.

Georgian citizens who want to return to the country have to fill out a special electronic application, available on the websites of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the diplomatic missions of Georgia.
