Coronavirus Global Updates: 113-year-old Spanish Woman Recovers from COVID-19

The latest updates claim that COVID-19 has infected 4,327,353 people worldwide. While 1,571,354 have recovered, 291,837 have lost their lives to the global pandemic, the cure for which is yet to be found.

The United States remains on the top of the global coronavirus cases list, having reported 1,404,734 infections. The country also has the highest death toll – 83,223 Americans have died as a consequence of the coronavirus pandemic. The pandemic is greatly damaging the US economy – the country reported a $738 billion budget deficit in April. While the economy needs a boost, the safety measures call for the States to go slow on the reopening – slower than Europe. The US infectious disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci has warned against hasty reopening, saying that it would result in “needless suffering and death.” This came as a model forecasted that 137,000 Americans will have died by August. The press secretary of US Vice President Katie Miller tested positive for the coronavirus last week. The alarming news was followed up on Tuesday in the White House – the staff was ordered to wear masks and Mike Pence himself “has made the choice to keep his distance for a few days from the President.” While some of the US States like North Carolina and New York are set to open up some social, religious and/or economic parts on their governing territories, some states like California are not looking into it – Los Angeles County is expected to remain under a kind of stay-at-home order for three months.

France’s pandemic death toll overtook Spain on Tuesday, rising by 348 overnight and hitting 26,991. With this, the country became the world’s fourth country in the ranking of the highest fatalities. President Macron noted that France is ready to go back to the strict measures once again if the situation calls for it. This will take place, according to the French President, if “daily new infections rise above 3,000.”

Germany continues to be the most successful of the large European countries in battling the virus. The country has reported 7,722 coronavirus-related deaths to date, while the UK has registered 32,692, Italy 30,911, and Spain 26,920 deaths. Germany’s success in curbing the virus is widely attributed to the massive testing in the country, which has also facilitated a partial reopening of the economy. German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Tuesday that “Germany must help other EU states get back on their feet,” adding that as Germany is an export nation it’s essential for the country to have the partners do well.

On a more positive note, a 113-year-old woman in Spain has recovered from the coronavirus, making the global situation due to the pandemic somewhat more bearable.
