NCDC: We Expect a Second Wave of COVID-19 in Fall
Even as Georgia moves ahead with plans to reopen its economy, the Deputy Head of the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) today warned that a second wave of the coronavirus infection may be imminent by the end of fall, reaching its peak in winter.
Paata Imnadze added that lifting the restrictions amid the ongoing outbreak may lead to an increased number of coronavirus-infected persons.
“People think the coronavirus pandemic is over, but the virus has not gone anywhere; it is still with us and will remain with us at least for another year. We expect a second strong outbreak by the end of autumn. We have to live with the virus. Social distancing, avoiding large gatherings, using face masks and following recommendations – this is the way of life we have to maintain. If we follow the rules, the virus will be less active in summer”, said Imnadze.
Imnadze added that there is a global shortage of the seasonal anti-flu vaccine and, it is more than possible that not everyone will have access to it.
“However, our country is prepared to provide the vaccine for high-risk groups”, Imnadze noted.
