Amiran Gamkrelidze: Georgia Should Prevent Second Wave of Coronavirus

Head of Georgia’s National Center for Disease Control, Amiran Gamkrelidze, today said the academic processes and the elections will not be threatened if Georgia maintains its current low rate of coronavirus infection.

“If we stick to the official recommendations and act as we did in previous months, there will be no sharp increase in coronavirus cases. Georgia will then avoid a second wave of the infection in autumn”, Gamkrelidze said.

“However, the situation we are now seeing in certain restaurants, or on the beaches, is alarming; we should not neglect the rules of wearing masks and keeping social distance in public spaces. Georgians have shown a high sense of social resonsibility over the last 3-4 months, and that’s why the rate of infection is relatively low in our country. We should try to maintain this dynamic. If we do not take care of our joint achievement and if we grant ourselves the same freedom we had last year, then we will face the risk of worsening the epidemic situation”, he added.

Gamkrelidze also said the slight increase in the coronavirus cases over the past several days was expected as the state of emergency and many other restrictions have been lifted.
