France Passes Controversial ‘Fake News’ Law

France's parliament has passed a new law, conceived by President Emmanuel Macron, which aims to halt the flowering of fabricated stories in the form of ‘fake news’ via social media.

Critics argue that the controversial law against ‘fake news’ could lead to jeopardising democracy and censoring the press.

Under the new regulation, a person who violates the law shall be sentenced to one year in prison or fined EUR 75,000.
