Islamic State Group Claims Attack on Afghanistan Prison
The Islamic State (IS) group has claimed a recent high-profile attack on a prison located in Jalalabad, eastern Afghanistan. At least 29 people have been killed, at least 50 have been wounded, and over 1000 prisoners tried to escape as the gunmen raided the prison. Some prisoners still remain missing.
Among the deceased are eight of the attackers who died in a battle that lasted almost 20 hours, according to a Nangarhar province spokesman. The attack continued until Monday morning.
Most of the prison inmates - 1,793 in total - were Taliban and IS fighters, as a security source reported to the AFP news agency. The provincial spokesman has stated that 1,025 escaped prisoners have been brought back to jail, and 430 have been rescued.
The exact numbers for the prisoners who are still missing and civilians, security guards, and the prisoners who have been killed, have yet to be revealed.
