Deputy Minister: Changing Start Date of Studies in Classrooms Not Planned

Despite the current epidemiological situation, the start date of schooling in Georgia will not change and the school year in the country will be resumed in classrooms on October 1, the First Deputy Minister of Health Tamar Gabunia announced after a meeting of the Interagency Coordination Council working on coronavirus-related issues.

Gabunia, however, does not rule out changes to the relevant protocols, noting that the above depends on international recommendations.

"Security protocols are quite detailed. I do not rule out that some modifications may be made if a new recommendation is given by the World Health Organization.

"No new decision has been made regarding the start date of studies in classrooms," she said.

For the record, the start of the school year in large cities of Georgia was postponed until October 1 following a rapid increase in new coronavirus cases. 

The decision applies equally to public and private schools and secondary and higher educational institutions.

Studies in Tbilisi, Gori, Rustavi, Kutaisi, Zugdidi, Poti, Batumi and Kobuleti were to have otherwise started on September 15.
