US Amb: Please, Go to Vote, Wear Face Masks & Observe Social Distancing

US Ambassador to Georgia Kelly Degnan met with Chairwoman of Georgian Central Election Commission (CEC) Tamar Zhvania. The sides talked about the voting process.

The US Ambassador underlined that the CEC had taken significant steps to ensure a safe environment for holding the elections amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

After meeting with officials at the Central Election Commission, Ambassador Degnan observed the voting at two polling sites in Marneuli.

“It is an exciting day for the Georgian people! The freedom to choose your leaders through fair elections is absolutely fundamental to a true democracy. The United States is actively supporting these elections and really wants the elections to go smoothly. It is up to the Georgian people to decide who they want to govern their country. The United States does not have a favorite candidate or a favorite party. We will work with any party that is legitimately elected by the Georgian people. We are focused on a fair process, not the outcome," Ambassador Degnan said.

“A fair election means one person, one vote – no ballot box stuffing, voting multiple times, or other forms of cheating to win. In a fair election, there is no place for intimidation, vote-buying, or forcing voters to photograph their ballots. Ultimately, the success of Georgia’s election is up to the Georgian people. It is vital that every Georgian make his or her voice heard by voting. So wear your masks, social distance, and get out there and vote!”

Throughout the day, Ambassador Degnan will be visiting polling sites, meeting with election officials, and talking with civil society election observers about what they are seeing and hearing.

The 2020 Parliamentary Elections are being held in Georgia today.
