Wizz Air, Air Baltic Temporarily Cancel Flights to Riga & Vilnius

The Civil Aviation Agency of Georgia reports that Hungarian low-cost airline Wizz Air is to cancel flights in the direction of the Riga-Kutaisi-Riga until December 19 and in the direction of Vilnius-Kutaisi-Vilnius until January 12.

The reason is the border and sanitary restrictions imposed by Latvia and Lithuania due to the deterioration of the epidemic situation in Georgia.

"Against the backdrop of a sharp rise in coronavirus infections, new border restrictions or additional sanitation requirements are being imposed by various states on a daily basis, reflecting airlines' decisions to extend or renew air traffic in one direction or another.

"We would like to inform the public that based on the application submitted by Wizz Air to the Civil Aviation Agency, the air carrier will temporarily cancel flights in the direction of Riga-Kutaisi-Riga until December 19, while the airline has postponed the resumption of operations until December 18 in the direction of Dortmund-Kutaisi-Dortmund and until January 12 in the direction of Vilnius-Kutaisi-Vilnius. The reason for the cancellation of regular flights is the border and sanitary restrictions imposed by Latvia, Germany and Lithuania due to the deterioration of the epidemic situation on the ground," the agency said in a statement.

Regular flights to Riga were also operated by another airline, Air Baltic, which resumed regular flights back in August. The Civil Aviation Agency reports that due to restrictions, Air Baltic also canceled flights until November 28, although the airline will perform repatriation flights to bring Georgian citizens to the homeland and carry foreign citizens out of the country.
