State Department: Pompeo Reaffirmed Unwavering US Support for Georgia
“Secretary Pompeo and President Zurabishvili discussed the importance of US-Georgia security cooperation,” reads the US State Department statement.
"Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo met today with Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili in Tbilisi, Georgia. Secretary Pompeo and President Zurabishvili discussed the importance of US-Georgia security cooperation. Secretary Pompeo reiterated the importance of free and fair elections and the essential role of an independent judiciary in a democracy and urged Georgia to take strong measures against the spread of COVID-19. The Secretary thanked Georgia for its support of the OSCE Minsk Group process for resolving the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan and reaffirmed unwavering US support for Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity in the face of Russian occupation", reads the statement.
The US State Department has also released information about a meeting between Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia and Foreign Minister David Zalkaliani.
“Secretary Pompeo and Prime Minister Gakharia discussed the importance of free, fair, and transparent parliamentary elections and the essential role of an independent judiciary in a democracy. The Secretary urged Georgia to continue active measures to combat COVID-19 and to improve cybersecurity. Secretary Pompeo also reiterated unwavering US support for Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity in the face of Russian occupation," reads the statement.
Mike Pompeo paid a two-day visit to Georgia on November 17.
