January 27 is International Holocaust Remembrance Day
January 27 marks International Holocaust Remembrance Day worldwide, including in Georgia.
The Israeli Embassy in Georgia responded to this date on Twitter:
"On January 27, the Embassy of Israel to Georgia together with the international community are marking the International Holocaust Remembrance Day," the Embassy wrote.
US Embassy in Tbilisi has also responded to this occasion:
"Today we pay tribute to the memory of the victims of the Holocaust and reaffirm our commitment to oppose antisemitism, racism, and any other form of intolerance. January 27 marks the anniversary of the liberation of the Concentration Camp Auschwitz-Birkenau in 1945 by Soviet troops. It commemorates the genocide committed by the Nazi regime and its collaborators, resulting in the deaths of 6 million Jews and 11 million others," the US Embassy stated.
The issue that community organizations are focusing on this year to commemorate the Holocaust is the denial of genocide, which, along with anti-Semitism, continues to rage around the world in various forms.
International Holocaust Remembrance Day is an international memorial day on 27 January commemorating the tragedy of the Holocaust that occurred during the Second World War. It commemorates the genocide that resulted in the deaths of 6 million Jews and 11 million others, by the Nazi regime and its collaborators. It was designated by the United Nations General Assembly resolution 60/7 on 1 November 2005 during the 42nd plenary session. The resolution came after a special session was held earlier that year on 24 January 2005 during which the United Nations General Assembly marked the 60th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi concentration camps and the end of the Holocaust.
On 27 January 1945, Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi concentration and death camp, was liberated by the Red Army.
As reported by Bloomberg, statistics show that anti-Semitism has again been on the rise in Europe.
