Senior Business Roles Held by Women in Georgia Down to 29%

A new report based on the annual Grant Thornton survey of 5,520 businesses in 36 economies and released on 8 March to coincide with International Women’s Day revealed that the number of senior leadership roles held by women in Georgia plummeted to 29 percent from 38 percent, while 26 percent of businesses in the country still have no women in management or executive roles.

The survey did, however, note a slight uptick worldwide of women in senior management positions from 22 percent to 24 percent, but a third of businesses still do not have women in any leadership position.

Members of the G7 are among the worst performing blocs, with just 22 percent of senior roles occupied by women and 39 percent of companies have no women in senior roles.

The two nations with the worst gender equality statistics are Japan, with women holding just 7 percent senior roles, and Germany with 15 percent.

Eastern Europe at 35 percent and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations at 34 percent report the highest proportions of women in either leadership or executive positions. Only 16 percent and 21 percent, respectively, of the firms in the two regions have no women in executive roles.

Russia tops the list of individual countries with 45 percent of management roles held by women, followed by the Philippines at 39 percent, Only 9 percent of businesses in both countries have no women in senior management.

Grant Thornton managing partner Nelson Petrosan said, “Companies across developed nations have talked the talk on diversity in leadership for long enough. It’s time to put their promises into practice and deliver results. We know that businesses with a diverse workforce can outperform their more homogenous peers and are better positioned to adapt to a rapidly changing global business environment.”

The Grant Thornton International Business Report provides insight into the views and expectations of more than 10,000 businesses per year across 36 economies.

The report is a survey of both listed and privately held businesses. The data for this release is drawn from interviews with 5,520 chief executive officers, managing directors, chairmen or other senior executives from all industry sectors between July and December 2015.
