Individuals Arrested for Child Trafficking

The Head of Rustavi Maternity House, Aleksandre Baravkov; Deputy Director, Konstantine Manjavidze; and one of the founders of the “New Maternity Center” Mzia Ugrekhelidze have all been detained for child trafficking.

According to the Investigation Department of the Finance Ministry, the detainees offered pregnant women money to abandon their newborn children and later gave the infants to third parties in exchange for cash. The detectives have revealed two cases of child trafficking, one for 3,000 and the second for 5,000 GEL.

The investigation is still ongoing to discover the possible involvement of other parties. The aforementioned individuals face 14 to 17 years in prison.
