Police Seize Cargo of Drugs at Batumi Port

BATUMI, Georgia - Ministry of Internal Affairs and Revenue Service officers on June 12 impounded almost 178 kg of narcotics hidden inside a secret compartment of a cargo container stored at Georgia's Black Sea port of Batumi.

The ministry said they found 356 packages of heroin that had likely been smuggled into Georgia from a neighboring country, but did not provide further details.

The ministry said criminal proceedings have been initiated. Those charged and found guilty could face a six to nine year prison term.
