The authorities identified the missing person as Sergey Smislov, who has lived in Georgia for 3 years and ran a construction company in Mestia in the remote highlands of western Georgia.

Smislov’s daughter told local TV company Rustavi-2, that her father went from Zugdidi, near the breakaway region Abkhazia, to Mestia on July 12 and was later discharged.

Smislov received a phone call from a friend, and then left in his car. She believes he disappeared near Muzhava, a village on the Mestia-Zugdidi road in an area near Abkhazia’s border.

Smislov had been living in Georgia for 3 years, but was planning to return to Germany.
