Downpour, Hail Hit Georgia’s Resort City Borjomi
BORJOMI, Georgia – A heavy downpour and a hailstorm hit Georgia’s main health resort town of Borjomi on Thursday night.
The storm damaged local roads, flooded houses and destroyed part of Borjomi’s central park, a refuge for many of the surrounding region’s unique tree species.
Power supplies in the town were cut, and vacationers were evacuated from the area’s famed sulphur baths.
Borjomi district governor Dimitri Kipiani announced that city authorities had set up and emergency response center and initiated extensive cleanup details.
"At this stage the main highway and most of the roads are open. Serious problems were created in the historical center, but tourists were evacuated in time. All first responder services have been mobilized,” Kipiani said.
