Marneuli Substation Construction Completed
MARNEULI, Georgia – New 500 kv substation in Marneuli, Kvemo Kartli region, which was officially opened on Monday, will significantly improve the provision of power supply to Tbilisi and Kvemo Kartli region.
The project was implemented by the Georgian State Electro System under the Transmission Grid Strengthening Project financed by the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
20 million USD was spent on the project. The modern substation equipped with the latest technologies is believed to move the country one step closer towards energy independence.
The event dedicated to the completion of construction on December 12 was attended by Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili and Deputy Prime Minister and Energy Minister Kakha Kaladze.
The PM said the project was an important part of the 50-million Transmission Grid Strengthening Project and the Government's 10-Year Strategic Plan for Transmission Grid Development. He said the plan meant 735 million euro's worth investments to be made in the country's power grid.
“It is very important for local generation sites, the population, economy and for strengthening Georgia's role as a transit hub," he stated.
The construction of Marneuli-500 is implemented by Turkish BEST/BETAS. By building the Marneuli 500kv Substation, the Georgian State Electro System has completed the 50-million Transmission Grid Strengthening Project financed by ADB.
