New Railway Station Opens in Batumi

A new railway station has opened in Batumi. The opening ceremony was held at the building, “Batumi Central,” located on Tamarashvili Street.
Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili and many other officials attended the opening ceremony.
“This is an important advance for Batumi. Batumi's potential is increasing; we should support it and use this to develop the infrastructure, ports and railways for our bright future,” the PM said, adding that the high season is here and the country has expectations for the arrival of many international guests.
"It is an important step for Batumi to be ready for the challenges of tourism, so that our guests won’t be left without unforgettable memories. With the opening of the new railway station, the city is also getting ready for the music festival “Batumi Hit 2015” on July 6."
The new station means that guests planning to spend the summer in Batumi will not only be able to travel from the capital Tbilisi to the seaside city of Batumi easily and quickly, but can also enjoy yet another summer of live music, cold drinks and delicious food.
"This [Batumi Hit 2015] is a festival which includes special events for guests and tourists. Each day is new in Batumi. It's a city you'll never want to leave,” said PM Garibashvili.
The new railway station was made possible with the support of the Georgian government and in close collaboration with Georgian Railway in order to reduce travel time and hassle for passengers who previously had to alight at Makhinjauri village (south of Batumi city) and travel on to Batumi by taxi or minibus.
"Now people can get off right in the center of Batumi city at no extra cost,” the PM said.
300 people will be employed from the local population to run the new railway extension and station.
