Earthquake Shakes Western Turkey

A magnitude 5.2 earthquake shook the western province of Canakkale early Tuesday, according to the country’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) and state-run news agency Anadolu.

No damages have been reported after the quake, which was centered beneath the Aegean Sea, hit the coastal province at 05.24 (0224GMT) and a depth of 6.6 kilometers (4 miles), the agency reported.

It was the third quake to strike Canakkale in the past two days.

Orhan Tavli, the governor for Canakkale, said nearly hundred homes were damaged in the first quake and at least five people were hospitalized with minor injuries. Tents have been dispatched to temporarily house those people, whose homes were damaged.

Anadolu news agency said the villages of Tasagil, Tuzla, Yukari, Cam, and Gulpinar, near Ayvacik, were affected.
