Georgian Sailor among Missing after Ship Sinks in Black Sea

A Georgian sailor was reported among the missing crew members, after the Panama-flagged general cargo ship, Geroi Arsenala, sank in the Black sea on April 19.

World Maritime News reports that the vessel was carrying 12 crewmembers, five of whom were spotted soon after the authorities launched the search and rescue mission. 

The crew consists of nine Ukrainian citizens, two Russian citizens and one citizen of Georgia.

According to the Maritime Transport Agency of the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia, the bodies of two sailors, who had been missing have been found. Their identities are unknown. 

The ship reportedly split in two and sank due to inclement weather at around 4 am local time some 14 nautical miles off the coast. However, the official reason of the shipwreck is not known yet.

The cargo ship was reportedly transporting grain from the port city of Azov in Russia’s Rostov region to Turkey. Its operator is a Turkish company, Gunes Shipping.
