Georgia Celebrates Victory Over Fascism

World War II veterans, Georgian government officials, politicians, and Catholicos-Patriarch Ilia II gathered to mark the72nd anniversary of the end of World War II and a victory over fascism at Vake Park in Tbilisi today, by visiting the memorial of an unknown soldier.

As celebrations are planned all over the country during the day, Giorgi Margvelashvili, President of Georgia visited Zugdidi in the Samegrelo region in memorial of the veterans and awarded a 91 year old veteran Olga Tsalan with a medal of honor and a 140 Lari medical voucher, to expressed his gratitude.

Giorgi Kvirikashvili, Prime Minister of Georgia, and Levan Izoria, Minister of Defence of Georgia, also congratulated veterans on the 72nd anniversary of their victory in World War II.

Almost 700,000 Georgians were called to military service during WWII, and 400,000 perished in the war. Today, 922 WWII veterans remain in Georgia.
