Georgian PM’s Address Promises Fair Local Elections

Ahead the October 21 Municipal Elections in Georgia, the Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili addressed the state institutions, political forces and the society  and noted that holding free and fair elections has become a common practice.

“I would like to address primarily the state institutions, secondarily the political powers and thirdly the society as a whole: let's hold these elections in a manner that will represent yet another step towards reinforcement of truly European democracy in Georgia, leave the violent elections in the past and forget the word for past fraudulent, violent elections altogether,” he added.

The PM underlined that that pre-election period was unprecedentedly calm.

“All electoral subjects had an opportunity to run free and peaceful campaigns, which demonstrates that Georgian Dream (GD), the political team in power, ensures holding free and democratic, competitive elections,” he claimed.

Kvirikashvili also addressed the law enforcers and police to spare no effort in preventing any possible act of violence, so nothing can cast a shadow on these elections.

The PM called on the population to take part in the elections, adding it is important for the development of Georgia and building an even better future.

“As a result of the changes implemented in our country, the link between the will of the voters and the responsibility of the Government should strengthen further. This link is the most important factor,” stated Kvirikashvili at Thursday’s Cabinet sitting.

Around 3.440.123 voters have been registered for the upcoming elections.

13 mayoral candidates have been registered in Tbilisi. 28 candidates will run the race for the Mayor’s post in 4 self-governing cities and 338 – in the communities.

1243 candidate members have also been registered for the elections. 994 out of them will be elected via proportional voting and 249 via majoritarian election system.

Also, 28 subjects including 22 political associations, 5 election blocs and one initiative group were registered for Municipal elections.
