No Basis for Claims of Very Cold Winter, National Environmental Agency State

The National Environmental Agency has said that there are no grounds to suggest that the winter season in Georgia will be especially cold, following the news spread in some Georgian media sources, claiming the temperature to drop to minus 20 degrees in the winter period.

As the National Environmental Agency states, the world’s leading weather forecasting centers usually make seasonal prognosis 10-15 days prior to the actual start of the forecasted season, applying numerical and analogue methods for weather predictions. The National Environmental Agency of Georgia has said that for European and West Asian countries, the seasonal weather forecast is made according to the models used in the weather prognosis centers in the UK, France and the US.

“At this stage, there are no grounds to confirm the information about winter being abnormaly cold in Georgia. The prognosis spread through numerous sources may solely be the assumptions of number of scientist and accordingly, it can’t be used as an official source of information,” The National Environmental Agency says.

From November 20 to 23, at a weather forecast forum to be held in Croatia, the long-term weather prognosis will be prepared for the 2017/2018 winter season, the information of which will then be available on the National Environmental Agency’s official site, and spread throughout the media, the agency says in the statement.
