Georgian Pianist Alexander Tsomaia to Perform at Music for Mental Health Event
US based Georgian pianist Alexander Tsomaia is to perform a solo concert at the Music for Mental Health event, to be held on November 30, at 19:30 at Tbilisi State Conservatoire Recital Hall. Georgian writer Lasha Bugadze will present a lecture on Music and Mental Health, while the event will feature an art exhibition of photos taken on disposable cameras by individuals with mental health problems.
The event is organized by the ღია (open) campaign, as part of the BBSA Georgia's mental health initiative, aiming to promote open and stigma-free discussions about mental health in Georgia; to raise public awareness of the problem, and to advocate the issue. Open Society Georgia Foundation is financially backing the project.
Music for Mental Health is a charity event to raise funds for the development of community-based mental health care. The beneficiary of the event will be the ‘Hand in Hand’ organization, and the funds raised will be used to buy a house where community based services and care will be provided for anyone in need.
“By attending the event, you are supporting those whose voices are heard the least in the society. This concert draws attention to the importance of mental health, knowing there is much to be done to increase public awareness and advocacy, and promote a stigma-free environment in Georgia”. The event organizers statement reads.
“With the aim to establish these new standards, we hope that this concert will be followed with a series of future musical events, in support of mental health. We hope that many more talented artists will join our open movement”, it says.
